Dendritic Cells: A Key Target for Vaccine Science

Ralph Steinman, M.D., head of the Rockefeller University Laboratory of Cellular Physiology and Immunology in New York City, will deliver the 2008 Kinyoun Lecture at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Masur auditorium. His talk, “Dendritic Cells: A Key Target for Vaccine Science,” focuses on a career-changing finding he was part of three decades ago, and its implications for vaccine development. Dr. Steinman serves as a science advisor to the Dana Foundation.

Science and the Law: A Tale of Two Cultures

The prevalence and importance of scientific issues in the courtroom is not only challenging to judges and juries, but verdicts that are rendered in such cases can have enormous ramifications for society as a whole. The challenges facing the courts in three areas of science and technology will be explored at a meeting co-sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Washington Academy of Sciences: neuroscience, digital technologies, and forensic sciences. The meeting will be held in the AAAS auditorium (entrance at 12th and H St., NW). The meeting is free and open to the public.
